Es definitivamente una experiencia que te saca a la fuerza de la realidad en la que llevo viviendo toda mi vida. 

No es la primera vez que paso un tiempo largo viviendo alejada de la civilización y del mundo que conozco. Después de un año de viaje por Sudamérica en 2022 pude disfrutar y empaparme de lo que es vivir lejos de cualquier atisbo de mi realidad conocida hasta ese momento y fue de lo más enriquecedor. 

Pero esta realidad es diferente. No estoy en un hostel con otros mochileros de viaje, ni haciendo un voluntariado de unas semanas, estoy viviendo aquí, mano a mano con gente que apenas tiene 80$ para pasar toda la semana con hijos, facturas y comida que pagar. 

Esta realidad te toca de una manera distinta, te hace ponerte en tu sitio de un guantazo y entender cómo funciona la vida y la suerte que tuve de nacer donde nací. Me hace sentir algo de vergüenza pensar muchas veces en todas las comodidades que tengo y lo arraigados que tengo mis hábitos occidentales, desde que me levanto hasta que me voy a dormir. La manera de entender la vida y de pensar en el futuro, en lo que quiero ser y cómo quiero serlo. Aquí, en el Caracol, me atrevo a decir que nadie ve la vida ni la ha conocido de la manera en la que yo la he tenido. 

Me levanto todas las mañanas sobre las 6:00h y preparamos el café en nuestra cocina de gas (que ya es un gran cambio teniendo en cuenta que siempre he cocinado en vitrocerámica y el café lo prepara la Nespresso en 2 minutos con una cápsula). Aquí todo lleva más tiempo, hay que ser paciente y entender que nada de lo que tenías antes de manera inmediata lo va a volver a ser, al menos por ahora. 

Mientras nos tomamos el café o el té, podemos ver por la ventana como en la casa de enfrente, el mediano de los hermanos, con tan solo 11 años, prepara la leña para encender el fuego y así poder calentar el café y el desayuno, que no será más que algo de frijoles o arroz para aguantar el día. Reparte pacientemente lo que sobró del día anterior para que ambos puedan comer, siempre dejando algo más para el mayor. Después, una vez acabado, cogen agua con un barreño pequeño del barril grande que pueden llenar cada día con el agua que les habilitan entre las 5 y las 6 de la mañana, y aclaran los platos y vasos antes de ir al colegio. Todo esto mientras yo me tomo mi café, sentada en la silla y apoyada en una mesa de madera alta, ellos desayunan de pie frente al fuego resguardados en su techado de láminas rescatadas de algún sobrante de una construcción años atrás. 

Cuando llueve, podemos escuchar las gotas caer en el tejado de casa y, si la lluvia no es muy fuerte, disfrutar de ese "ruido blanco" relajante que a veces me ponía n el móvil en España para poder dormir. En la casa de enfrente, en cuanto empiezan a escuchar las gotas sonando en la chapa, se preparan para lo peor. El más pequeño, de 8 años, va corriendo a coger leña antes de que la madera se eche a perder con el agua. A veces el mediano le echa una mano ya que es mucho peso y no puede cargar él solo con todo. El mayor, prepara los barreños dentro de casa en los lugares que ya sabe que empezarán a gotear para evitar que la ropa y las camas se mojen lo menos posible, y el mediano, cogerá el cabezal de una pala que alguien les dio en su día y comenzará a cavar los surcos en la tierra para desviar el agua de la entrada e intentar que entre la menor posible. Todos saben ya lo que tienen que hacer cuando no está mamá. 

Mientras tanto yo, desde mi ventana, solamente me preparo un té y palomitas porque en casa, desde siempre, la lluvia ha significado tarde de Netflix y con la única preocupación de no entrar con los zapatos llenos de barro a casa.

Por otro lado, la madre de tres, empieza a trabajar a las 7:00h, a la misma hora que los niños andan hasta la carretera principal a esperar al bus que les llevará al colegio. Ellos vuelven mucho antes que ella, así que se encargan de preparar el fuego para calentar algo de comida que sobró el día de antes y poder almorzar. Mientras los mayores preparan la comida, el pequeño juega con un par de juguetes rotos que le regalaron hace tiempo y una pelota de plástico que se encontró volviendo del colegio un día. Nosotros acabamos el voluntariado a la hora de comer, así que normalmente les encontramos ya metidos en su rutina diaria de después del cole. 

Cuando las nubes bajan y cubren la colina, es señal de que el frío va a llegar. Nosotros nos ponemos pantalón largo y una chaqueta y salimos a dar un paseo para disfrutar de las nubes cubriendo todo el valle. Mientras tanto, ellos seleccionan la ropa que no está mojada o esperando para lavar y la colocan haciendo una pila a los lados de sus camas para evitar el contacto con la chapa que hace de pared y evitar que el frío les entre por la noche. Con 2 camas para 4 personas el espacio se queda bastante justo si contamos con las pilas de ropa. Pero ellos están acostumbrados, esa es la vida que conocen. 

Nos está costando entender que su vida, vista desde el prisma desde donde nosotros hemos crecido, es trágica, dura y te parte el corazón. Sin embargo, para ellos es la vida que conocen y no les hace infelices ni desgraciados ni tristes. Enfrentan las situaciones que a nosotros nos parecen extremas con una normalidad que te deja sin palabras. Aun así, intentamos ayudar en todo lo que podemos y por supuesto mejorar la calidad de vida en aquello a lo que llegamos. 

María, la mamá, aprovecha el único día libre que tiene cada semana para ir a comprar maíz, frijoles y queso y dedicar la tarde a hacer pupusas que luego venderá a los vecinos de la zona. Eso quiere decir que nunca descansa, nunca tiene vacaciones, no tiene grandes planes y sabrá donde va a estar y qué va a hacer el resto de su vida. Y es feliz de esta manera. Se siente agradecida y afortunada. Yo le ayudo los domingos para que pueda hacer más y así vender más. Aprovechamos ese ratito para hablar y que me cuente cómo está y contarle cómo es, o mejor dicho, ha sido mi vida hasta ahora. 

En el mundo occidental vivimos constantemente preocupados por cuál será el paso siguiente, cómo podemos estar mejor, qué nos falta todavía para ser felices y por qué hasta ahora no lo hemos conseguido. Vivimos comparándonos con el de al lado y lo bien que está él y todo lo que me falta a mí. María no tiene teléfono, dice que no le hace falta. Lo que necesita sabe dónde encontrarlo y quien la necesita sabe a dónde ir. 

Es difícil entender que su vida, en muchos sentidos, no necesita ser cambiada, ni mejorada. No porque no se pueda sino porque ellos mismos no quieren. Esa es la vida que conocen, es donde saben estar y donde quieren seguir. Quizá con menos goteras en casa o más aislamiento para el frío. Quizá con algo de agua caliente y la tranquilidad de que no les faltará comida en su plato. Y en eso es en lo que les vamos a ayudar. Pero lo demás, la sencillez de una vida que solo la vives cuando te toca nacer en un sitio así, sin haberlo querido, sin haber hecho nada, sin elegirlo, es algo a lo que no quieren renunciar. Y ese es el chip que muchas veces tenemos que aprender a apagar, es la mentalidad que todavía tenemos que cambiar y entender que no todo el mundo quiere ser "occidentalizado". Solamente quieren vivir tranquilos y felices con lo que tienen y lo que conocen. 

Así que mientras tanto, en la casita de enfrente, los 3 hermanos siguen cuidándola mientras María trabaja. Protegiéndola de la lluvia y el frío, cocinando y cuidándose los unos de los otros. Nosotros intentamos dejar la puerta abierta cada día. No queremos ir corriendo a ayudarles a cambiar todo lo que consideramos, sino que les damos la oportunidad de tener una mano amiga que les haga esta vida en las montañas un poco más fácil siempre que lo necesiten.

DONA PARA ELLOS

It's definitely an experience that forces you out of the reality I've been living in my entire life.

This isn't the first time I've spent a long period of time living away from civilization and the world I know. After a year of traveling through South America in 2022, I was able to enjoy and soak up what it's like to live far from any hint of my previously known reality, and it was incredibly enriching.

But this reality is different. I'm not staying in a hostel with other backpackers, or volunteering for a few weeks. I'm living here, side by side with people who barely have $80 to spend the whole week with kids, bills, and food to pay for.

This reality hits you in a different way; it makes you stand out from the crowd and understand how life works and how lucky I was to be born where I was. It often makes me feel a little ashamed to think about all the comforts I have and how deeply rooted my Western habits are, from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. The way I understand life and think about the future, about what I want to be and how I want to be. Here at Caracol, I dare say no one sees life or has ever known it the way I have.

I get up every morning around 6:00 a.m. and we make coffee on our gas stove (which is quite a change considering I've always cooked on a ceramic stovetop and the Nespresso coffee is made in 2 minutes with a capsule). Everything takes longer here; you have to be patient and understand that nothing you had before will ever be the same again, at least not for now.

While we drink coffee or tea, we can see through the window how, in the house across the street, the middle brother, just 11 years old, is preparing the firewood to light the fire and heat up the coffee and breakfast, which will be nothing more than some beans or rice to get them through the day. He patiently divides up the leftovers from the previous day so they can all eat, always leaving something extra for the oldest. Then, once they're finished, they fetch water with a small basin from the large barrel they can fill each day with the water provided between 5 and 6 a.m., and rinse the plates and glasses before heading to school. All this while I drink my coffee, sitting in the chair with my back against a high wooden table, while they eat breakfast standing in front of the fire, sheltered under their roof made of tin sheets salvaged from a construction site years ago.

When it rains, we can hear the drops falling on the roof of our house and, if the rain isn't too heavy, enjoy the relaxing "white noise" I sometimes played on my phone back in Spain to help me fall asleep. In the house in front, as soon as they start hearing the drops on the tin, they prepare for the worst. The youngest, 8, runs to gather firewood before the wood spoils with water. Sometimes the middle child lends a hand, since it's a lot of weight and he can't carry it all alone. The oldest prepares the buckets inside the house in places he knows will start to leak, to keep clothes and beds as dry as possible, and the middle child takes the head of a shovel someone gave them one day and begins to dig furrows in the ground to divert the water away from the inflow and try to keep as little of it as possible. They all know what to do when Mom's not around.

Meanwhile, from my window, I'm just making myself some tea and popcorn because at home, rain has always meant late watching Netflix, and my only worry is not coming home with muddy shoes.

On the other hand, the mother of three starts work at 7:00 a.m., the same time the children walk to the main road to wait for the bus to take them to school. They return long before her, so they take charge of preparing the fire to heat up some leftover food from the day before so they can have lunch. While the older ones prepare lunch, the youngest plays with a couple of broken toys they gave him a while ago and a plastic ball he found on his way home from school one day. We finish our volunteering at lunchtime, so we usually find them already immersed in their daily after-school routine.

When the clouds lower and cover the hill, it's a sign that the cold is coming. We put on long pants and a jacket and go for a walk to enjoy the clouds blanketing the entire valley. Meanwhile, they sort out the clothes that aren't wet or waiting to be washed and pile them up on either side of their beds to avoid contact with the metal wall and keep the cold out at night. With two beds for four people, the space is pretty tight even with the piles of clothes. But they're used to it; this is the life they know.

We're having a hard time understanding that their life, seen from the perspective of how we grew up, is tragic, hard, and heartbreaking. However, for them, it's the life they know, and it doesn't make them unhappy, miserable, or sad. They face situations that seem extreme to us with a normalcy that leaves you speechless. Even so, we try to help in every way we can and, of course, improve the quality of life in the places we've reached.

María, the mother, takes advantage of her only day off each week to go buy corn, beans, and cheese and spend the afternoon making pupusas that she'll later sell to the neighbors in the area. This means she never rests, never has a vacation, has no big plans, and knows where she's going to be and what she's going to do for the rest of her life. And she's happy that way. She feels grateful and fortunate. I help her on Sundays so she can make more and sell more. We take advantage of that time to talk and hear how she's doing and tell her what my life is like, or rather, what it's been like up until now.

In the Western world, we're constantly worried about what the next step will be, how we can be better, what we still need to be happy, and why we haven't achieved it yet. We live comparing ourselves to the person next door, how well he's doing, and how much I'm missing. Maria doesn't have a phone; she says she doesn't need one. She knows where to find what she needs, and whoever needs her knows where to go.

It's hard to understand that their life, in many ways, doesn't need to be changed or improved. Not because it can't be, but because they themselves don't want it. This is the life they know, it's where they know how to be and where they want to continue. Maybe with fewer leaks in their house or more insulation against the cold. Maybe with some hot water and the peace of mind that they won't lack food on their plates. And that's what we're going to help them with. But the rest, the simplicity of a life that you only live when you happen to be born in a place like that, without having wanted it, without having done anything, without choosing it, is something they don't want to give up. And that's the chip we often have to learn to turn off; it's the mentality we still need to change and understand that not everyone wants to be "Westernized." They just want to live peacefully and happily with what they have and what they know.

So meanwhile, in the little house across the street, the three brothers continue to take care of her while María works. Protecting her from the rain and the cold, cooking, and looking out for each other. We try to leave the door open every day. We don't want to rush in and help them change everything we consider, but rather give them the opportunity to have a helping hand that can make this life in the mountains a little easier whenever they need it.

Esta última semana ha sido un auténtica locura. 

El pasado viernes llegamos a la región cafetera de El Salvador, concretamente a Los Naranjos. Un pueblo muy pequeño a mitad de camino entre Santa Ana y Sonsonate, al occidente del país. 

A pesar de estar a solo un par de horas de la capital, el clima y la naturaleza cambian completamente el escenario y se respire paz, tranquilidad y pureza. 

Considerado el inicio de "La Ruta de las Flores" y a 15 minutos de Juayúa, pequeña ciudad referente para mochileros y viajeros en el país, Los Naranjos es un pueblito que ha crecido a lo largo de la carretera y, a pesar de su tamaño, tiene todo lo necesario, además de restaurantes muy acogedores y puestos de fruta y verdura fresca excelentes. 

A tan solo 10 minutos de este pueblito, se encuentra la finca de Murphslife. Un proyecto benéfico financiado gracias a donativos de personas y empresas de todas partes del mundo que creen en este precioso proyecto que Aaron comenzó hace ya varios años. Pero quizá este es uno de los más ambiciosos, ya que el objetivo es crear una pequeña aldea sostenible capaz de autofinanciarse y poder generar riqueza tanto en la zona como a los salvadoreños que forman parte de ella. Un lugar que invita a reconectar con la naturaleza y disfrutar del entorno natural. El objetivo es crear una comunidad donde todos puedan nutrirse los unos de los otros y, a través de la permacultura como motor del cambio, un restaurante para disfrutar de la comida más fresca y recién traída del cultivo, y un hotel boutique para disfrutar de la experiencia completa, crear nuevas estrategias de financiación que permitan convertir a este lugar en un referente en el país y, quién sabe, una fuente de inspiración para muchos más proyectos de esta magnitud. 

Al llegar a la finca, nos sentimos como en casa desde el principio. José y Mónica, responsables del terreno y el proyecto, nos acogieron con los brazos abiertos y nos explicaron la dinámica de trabajo y los planes de futuro para la comunidad. Después de charlar un rato y compartir experiencias, nos llevaron a lo que va a ser nuestro hogar de ahora en adelante por los próximos dos meses: una casita en la cima de la colina rodeada por el volcán Santa Ana e Izalco, un lugar único en el mundo. Qué afortunados nos sentimos al poder disfrutar de ese primer atardecer en lo alto de la montaña, donde pudimos ver todo el valle hasta terminar en el Pacífico y las playas de Sonsonate. Un espectáculo. 

Al anochecer, el cielo se llena de estrellas y, junto a las luces diminutas de la ciudad, forman un manto completo en la oscuridad que te transporta a otro planeta, es realmente mágico. 

En la finca nos encargamos de las tareas en las que se nos necesite cada día. Desde ir a coger agua al río, hasta regar los jardines, plantar maní para evitar la erosión de la tierra o desahogar las flores y plantas aromáticas para que puedan crecer más fuertes y sanas. Es un constante trabajo con la tierra y en sintonía con la naturaleza que realmente te hace reflexionar sobre cómo de desconectados vivimos en occidente y cómo hemos perdido esa armonía con el mundo natural, con el pulmón de nuestro planeta y el núcleo alrededor del que gira toda nuestra civilización: las plantas, la tierra, los animales,... 

Es realmente gratificante entrar en contacto con la tierra con tus propias manos y trabajarla, cuidarla, mimarla y darle cariño. Después de 10 años en el mundo empresarial y 3 años liderando 2 departamentos, puedo decir que sembrar el maní para proteger a las hortensias durante 4 horas me hizo sentirme realizada y exitosa de una manera que no podría explicar. Simplemente te hace feliz, te pone en paz con tu mente y tu cuerpo, la energía que viene de la tierra te recarga de una manera muy especial. 

He sido scout durante 20 años y el contacto con la naturaleza es imprescindible. Es parte del aprendizaje y es el escenario donde se desarrolla toda tu evolución desde que eres un niño hasta que pasas a ser adulto. Me ha recordado mucho a ese tiempo donde la naturaleza era mi casa, pero por períodos cortos de tiempo: acampadas, excursiones, etc. siempre con una fecha de vuelta. Recuerdo el shock de volver a la ciudad y tener que "readaptarme" a esa vida artificial después de 2 semanas perdida en la montaña. Nunca era agradable y siempre volvía con ganas de más. 

Estos dos próximos meses no tengo que volver a ningún lado y, mejor aún, puedo seguir descubriendo y explorando los alrededores sin necesidad de conectar de nuevo con "una vida más artificial". Incluso los pueblos y aldeas están integradas con esa naturaleza y sacan el máximo partido de ella. 

Además, tuve la suerte de celebrar mi 30 cumpleaños aquí, rodeada de gente que apenas me conocía pero que me hicieron sentir como en casa desde el principio. La alegría y cercanía de todo el mundo, no solo en su tiempo libre, sino también trabajando, deja ver también cómo las condiciones de trabajo en este sitio son mucho mejores que en cualquier otro lugar. Me prepararon una tarta, me cantaron y comimos en un lugar espectacular. No puedo estar más agradecida. 

Todo pasa por algo en esta vida y quizá teníamos que llegar aquí y encontrarnos con gente que está en sintonía con nosotros. Quizá teníamos que vivir encima de esa colina por alguna razón y poder disfrutar de las vistas, de la paz, de la amabilidad y generosidad de la gente y de la pureza del aire por algún motivo. Quizá la vida nos esté diciendo que este es el sitio por el que tenemos que empezar nuestro proyecto, pero solo quizá. 

Veremos qué nos deparan las siguientes semanas.

This past week has been absolutely crazy.

Last Friday, we arrived in the coffee-growing region of El Salvador, specifically in Los Naranjos. A very small town halfway between Santa Ana and Sonsonate, in the western part of the country.

Despite being only a couple of hours from the capital, the climate and nature completely change the scenery, exuding peace, tranquility, and purity.

Considered the beginning of "The Route of Flowers" and 15 minutes from Juayúa, a small town that is a benchmark for backpackers and travelers in the country, Los Naranjos is a small town that has grown along the highway and, despite its size, has everything you need, as well as very cozy restaurants and excellent fresh fruit and vegetable stands.

Just 10 minutes from this small town is the Murphslife farm. A charitable project funded thanks to donations from individuals and companies from all over the world who believe in this beautiful project Aaron began several years ago. But this is perhaps one of the most ambitious, as the goal is to create a small, sustainable village capable of self-financing and generating wealth both in the area and for the Salvadorans who live there. A place that invites you to reconnect with nature and enjoy the natural surroundings. The goal is to create a community where everyone can nourish each other and, through permaculture as a driving force for change, a restaurant where you can enjoy the freshest food freshly harvested from the farm, and a boutique hotel where you can enjoy the full experience, creating new financing strategies that will allow this place to become a benchmark in the country and, who knows, a source of inspiration for many more projects of this magnitude.

Upon arriving at the farm, we felt at home from the very beginning. José and Mónica, the project and land managers, welcomed us with open arms and explained the work dynamics and future plans for the community. After chatting for a while and sharing experiences, they led us to what will be our home for the next two months: a small house at the top of the hill surrounded by the Santa Ana and Izalco volcanoes, a unique place in the world. We felt so fortunate to be able to enjoy that first sunset atop the mountain, where we could see the entire valley all the way to the Pacific Ocean and the beaches of Sonsonate. Just stunning.

At dusk, the sky fills with stars and, together with the tiny lights of the city, they form a complete blanket of darkness that transports you to another planet; it's truly magical.

On the farm, we take care of the tasks we're needed for every day. From fetching water from the river to watering the gardens, planting vines to prevent soil erosion, or weeding the flowers and herbs so they can grow stronger and healthier. It's constant work with the land and in harmony with nature that truly makes you reflect on how disconnected we live in the West and how we've lost that harmony with the natural world, with the lungs of our planet and the core around which our entire civilization revolves: plants, the earth, animals...

It's truly rewarding to connect with the earth with your own hands and work it, care for it, pamper it, and show it love. After 10 years in the business world and 3 years leading two departments, I can say that planting vines to protect the hydrangeas for 4 hours made me feel fulfilled and successful in a way I couldn't explain. It simply makes you happy, puts you at peace with your mind and body, and the energy that comes from the earth recharges you in a very special way.

Everything happens for a reason in this life, and maybe we were meant to come here and meet people who are in tune with us. Maybe we were meant to live on top of that hill for a reason and be able to enjoy the views, the peace, the kindness and generosity of the people, and the purity of the air for a reason. Maybe life is telling us that this is the place we should start our project, but just maybe.

 El proceso de adaptación a un nuevo país no es fácil, al menos no para mí. El choque climático, especialmente cuando estás tan lejos, es lo primero que sientes al llegar. Después, eso va acompañado de muchas otras cosas que te hacen sentir cómo tu cuerpo y tu mente están fuera de la zona de confort de manera radical. 

Siempre me he sentido bien saliendo fuera de mi zona segura. La ilusión y las ganas por empezar una nueva aventura y descubrir nuevos lugares, comida, formas de vivir, opiniones, maneras de entender la vida,... son siempre tan grandes que al miedo solo le queda un rinconcito muy pequeño al que poder ajustarse en todo ese caos de sentimientos que llevo dentro antes de partir. 

Desde muy pequeña, recuerdo pensar en cómo era posible que otras personas vivieran una vida diferente a a la que yo conocía, me llamaba mucho la atención que la gente hablara un idioma diferente al que yo conocía y no entendía por qué no todo el mundo era como yo. Tenía esa "ansiedad" de saber que me moriría sin conocer a todo el mundo que vive en otros países y que habla otras lenguas. Por eso aprendí idiomas, quería saber qué decían y cómo lo habían aprendido ellos. Con el tiempo, cuanto más idiomas aprendes, te das cuenta que el idioma es una expresión viva de la cultura y la historia del país del que procede y que puedes sumergirte muy profundo y encontrar un montón de curiosidades. 

Sentirme extranjera no es un problema para mí. Me hace reír cómo la gente encuentra algunas de las cosas que hago, digo o pienso, divertidas o raras. Al revés también sucede, así que suelen ser encuentros llenos de risas, de curiosidad, amabilidad y ganas de saber más. Son momentos que me hacen entender que la vida está llena de riqueza y matices y solo aumenta mi curiosidad por saber cuál será el siguiente. 

Pero no todo es tan bonito siempre y, para ser sincera. Salir de tu zona de confort no es siempre tan divertido y hay momentos difíciles que te hacen cuestionarte las decisiones que has ido tomando por el camino. Y así ha sido esta última semana. 

En mi caso, cuando viajo de verdad, no cuando visito países, hay varias fases:

Ilusión

Pánico

Son esos días previos, horas, o quizá momentos concretos justo antes de viajar. En esos momentos, siempre a solas, es cuando me paro a pensar fríamente en la decisión. Cuestiono todo: dejar mi trabajo, alejarme de mi familia y perderme su día a día, perder esa cercanía y apoyo en mis amigos, estar tirando mi vida por la borda o simplemente quizá estar tomando una decisión fruto de la inmadurez y de la lucha constante por mantenerme en mi País de Nunca Jamás. Pero igual que llega, como una ola silenciosa pero arrolladora, la espuma vuelve a barrer de vuelta al agua toda esa mala energía y deja al mar en calma otra vez.

Los primeros días/semanas del viaje. Todo es nuevo. Estoy demasiado ocupada descubriendo, tratando de adaptarme y hacer mi huequito que no pienso en que estoy lejos de casa, que no tengo a mis amigos y familia cerca o que he dejado mi trabajo después de 8 años. Como buen explorador, solo me dedico a conocer, explorar, hablar y crear una primera pequeña rutina que me haga encontrarme a mí en un nuevo escenario. 

Y después de este momento pueden pasar dos cosas:

Paz/tranquilidad

Una vez encontrado ese espacio para mí, me limito a disfrutarlo, a contactar de nuevo con mi círculo de manera más constante y contarles cómo me siento y lo que estoy aprendiendo. Un período de paz y calma antes de empezar la siguiente fase. 

Impotencia/Frustración

No consigo encontrar mi lugar. Encuentro cosas que me hacen sonreír, que llaman mi atención y que me permiten sentirme cómoda, pero por alguna razón me siento pequeña, insegura y más callada, el miedo se hace más grande. 

Después de la tercera semana, caí cuesta abajo y sin frenos en el segundo escenario. 

No hay una razón concreta o pueden ser muchas al mismo tiempo. Sentía que el día pasaba pero no los aprovechaba todo lo que quería o "debería". Cualquier rato muerto me generaba intranquilidad y no me permitía estar en calma, ya que mi cabeza estaba llena de ruido. Lo peor de todo, es que ese ruido se va haciendo cada vez más y más grande hasta que no te deja pensar y, después de un tiempo, no te deja ver. Todo tiene un tinte gris y no consigues disfrutar nada de lo que haces, por eso todo te parece insuficiente. 

Además, se añade el hecho de, en mi caso, encontrarme "cumpliendo mi sueño", así que no se me permite estar triste, o al menos yo así lo veía. he dejado todo atrás por perseguir esto, que es lo que me hace feliz y no puedo estar triste. No puedo permitirme el lujo de tener un día más apagado o no tener ganas de conocer, no tener ganas de salir a la calle y explorar, no estar todo el tiempo trabajando en el proyecto. Lo siento pero no, no puedo. O así pensaba hasta hace muy muy poco. 

Lo que me ayudó a salir de ahí, aunque sea obvio, yo no lo veía: decirlo en voz alta, hablar, compartir ese pesar, soltar esa carga un ratito y dejar que la gente que te quiere te ayude a hacerla más ligera. Yo acudí a mi pareja, mi compañero de equipo, mi mejor amigo. Qué tarde lo hice pero qué peso más grande te quitas una vez que te escuchas en voz alta. Yo, sin darme cuenta, empecé a hablar y muy poquito después estaba llorando, soltándolo todo, vomitando lo que pensaba, cómo me sentía y por qué me pesaba. 

Cuando compartes cualquier carga con alguien que te quiere y no te juzga, todo es infinitamente más fácil y el peso se va casi al instante. También ayuda poder escucharte en voz alta y sentir que mientras todo eso sale tu cuerpo se va sintiendo más ligero, más tranquilo, más en paz. 

Y así, como por arte de magia, el día empieza a recuperar sus colores, las ganas de contar, reír y curiosear salen de donde sea que estuvieran escondidas para seguir con su misión, la capacidad de percibir los detalles bonitos del día a día vuelve a renacer y las ganas de volver a hacer todo aquello que no te apetecía por un tiempo aparecen de nuevo. 

Es tan importante que te recuerden que vales, que estás aquí por algo, que mereces la pena y que vas por el buen camino. No todo el tiempo, pero cuando pierdes un poco las fuerzas, qué importante es tener personas al lado que vuelvan a desplegarte las alas para poder continuar el viaje. 

Y sí, ahora estoy mejor, preparada para cumplir los 30 en unas horas y dándome cuenta que todavía me queda un camino largo, empinado y muchos obstáculos por delante. Pero eso sí, que las ganas de explorar, conocer, aprender y mejorar siempre sean mucho más grandes.

The process of adapting to a new country is not easy, at least not for me. The climate shock, especially when you are so far, is the first thing you feel when you arrive. Then, that is accompanied by many other things that make you feel how your body and your mind are out of the comfort zone radically.

I have always felt good going out of my safe zone. The illusion and desire to start a new adventure and discover new places, food, ways of living, opinions, ways of understanding life, ... are always so great that fear only has a very small corner to be able to adjust in all that chaos of feelings that I carry inside before leaving.

From an early age, I remember thinking about how it was possible for other people to live a different life than what I knew, it caught my attention that people spoke a different language than I knew and did not understand why not everyone was like me. I had that "anxiety" of knowing that I would die without knowing everyone who lives in other countries and speaks other languages. That's why I learned languages, I wanted to know what they said and how they had learned it. Over time, the more languages ​​you learn, you realize that language is a living expression of the culture and history of the country from which it comes and that you can immerse yourself very deep and find a lot of curiosities.

Feeling foreign is not a problem for me. It makes me laugh how people find some of the things I do, say or think, fun or rare. On the contrary, it also happens, so they are usually encounters full of laughter, curiosity, kindness and desire to know more. These are moments that make me understand that life is full of wealth and nuances and only increases my curiosity to know which one will be.

But not everything is always so beautiful to be honest. Leaving your comfort zone is not always so fun and there are difficult times that make you question the decisions that you have been making on the way. And so it has been this last week.

In my case, when I really travel, not when I visit countries, there are several phases:

Excitement

The moment I decide that yes, that I leave. I buy the ticket and start imagining a thousand plans and ideas that I will carry out during that trip. It is that warm sensation within the body that makes me get up thinking new ideas, maybe also disconnect a little with the present and put my head already on the trip.

Panic

It is those previous days, hours, or perhaps concrete moments just before traveling. In those moments, always alone, it is when I stop to think coldly about the decision. I question everything: to leave my job, get away from my family and lose my day to day, lose that closeness and support in my friends, be throwing my life overboard or simply making a decision as a result of immaturity and the constant struggle to stay in my country. of origin. But just as it arrives, like a silent but overwhelming wave, the foam sweeps all that bad energy back to the water and leaves the sea calm again.

Euphoria

The first days/weeks of the trip. Everything is new. I am too busy discovering, trying to adapt and make my hole that I do not think that I am far from home, that I do not have my friends and family near or that I have left my job after 8 years. As a good explorer, I only dedicate myself to know, explore, speak and create a first small routine that makes me find me in a new scenario.

And after this moment two things can happen:

Peace/Tranquility 

Once that space for me is found, I just enjoy it, to contact my circle again more constantly and tell them how I feel and what I am learning. A period of peace and calm before starting the next phase.

Frustration

I can't find my place. I find things that make me smile, that attract my attention and that allow me to feel comfortable, but for some reason I feel small, insecure and quieter, fear becomes bigger.

After the third week, I fell down and without brakes in the second stage.

There is no concrete reason or they can be many at the same time. I felt the day passed but did not take advantage of everything I wanted or "should." Any dead time generated unease and did not allow me to be calm, since my head was full of noise. Worst of all, this noise is getting more and more until it does not let you think and, after a while, it does not let you see. Everything has a gray dye and you can't enjoy what you do, so everything seems insufficient.

Added to this is the fact that, in my case, I'm "fulfilling my dream," so I'm not allowed to be sad, or at least that's how I saw it. I've left everything behind to pursue this, which is what makes me happy, and I can't be sad. I can't afford to have a duller day or not feel like exploring, not feel like going out and exploring, not spending all my time working on the project. I'm sorry, but no, I can't. Or so I thought until very, very recently.

What helped me get out of there, even though it's obvious, I didn't see it: saying it out loud, talking, sharing that sorrow, letting go of that burden for a while, and letting the people who love you help make it lighter. I turned to my partner, my teammate, my best friend. It took me a while to do it, but what a weight is lifted once you hear yourself out loud. Without realizing it, I started talking, and very soon after, I was crying, letting it all out, throwing up what I was thinking, how I felt, and why it was weighing me down.

When you share any burden with someone who loves you and doesn't judge you, everything is infinitely easier, and the weight lifts almost instantly. It also helps to be able to listen to yourself speak out loud and feel that as it all comes out, your body feels lighter, calmer, more at peace.

And so, as if by magic, the day begins to regain its color, the desire to tell stories, laugh, and be curious emerges from wherever it was hidden to continue its mission, the ability to notice the beautiful details of everyday life is reborn, and the desire to do everything you haven't felt like doing for a while reappears.

It's so important to be reminded that you are worthy, that you are here for a reason, that you are worth it, and that you are on the right path. Not all the time, but when you lose a little strength, how important it is to have people by your side who spread your wings again so you can continue the journey.

And yes, I'm better now, ready to turn 30 in a few hours and realizing that I still have a long, steep road ahead, with many obstacles ahead. But always making sure to keep the desire to explore, learn, and improve even stronger.

Primera semana 

Llegada al Aeropuerto - San Salvador

El viaje desde el aeropuerto a San Salvador es de una hora aproximadamente. Depende mucho del tráfico, ya que en ciertas horas puedes estar atascado un buen rato. A nosotros nos recogió la Oficina de Invest del gobierno en una furgoneta. hemos estado en contacto con ellos desde que empezamos a planificar el proyecto y nos han estado apoyando mucho durante el proceso. Bus es complicado, ya que hay que caminar un poco para cogerlo, pero un taxi no debería costar más de 30$ hasta el centro de la capital. 

El AirBnB que cogimos está bastante cerca del centro. Recomiendo siempre, si son largas estancias, contactar con los dueños y acordar un precio para los meses que necesitéis. Siempre os va a salir más económico. Los alquileres en la capital no son baratos por dos motivos: 

- Los propietarios saben muy bien que San Salvador comienza a ser un destino atractivo.

- La mayoría de los extranjeros que vienen son Norteamericanos o Australianos, por lo que sigue siendo barato para ellos. 

Nuestra casa nos salió a 700$ al mes y es de las más baratas que hemos encontrado. Eso sí, el trato de Mario, el propietario, ha sido impecable. Los primeros días Sean estuvo bastante enfermo del estómago y él nos trajo tanto medicinas como agua mineral y vino a visitarnos varias veces para asegurarse de que estábamos bien y no nos faltaba nada. 

El Espino

Ese fin de semana, nos llevó a conocer su finca, a ver la playa de El Espino y a dar una vuelta por Berlín y Alegría, dos pueblitos preciosos que están en la sierra de La Joya y con unas vistas increíbles del valle y la costa. 

La Libertad

 

Encontramos también muchas barberías por el camino, así que Sean se cortó el pelo por 4$!

Segunda semana 

Turismo por el Centro histórico

Las semanas siguientes nos dedicamos a familiarizarnos con el barrio, la vida cotidiana, la zona de compras, de parques, de entretenimiento, etc. 

Estuvimos conociendo el Centro histórico que se renovó no hace muchos años después de liberar al país del régimen de las Maras. Solía estar lleno de vendedores ambulantes y puestos de chapa y plástico que lo hacían imposible para caminar. También era bastante inseguro y no podías caminar con el teléfono en la mano o con grandes cantidades de dinero. 

Ahora es un centro renovado, que nada tiene que envidiar al resto del continente y con espacios naturales y monumentos preciosos. Todos los vendedores ambulantes fueron trasladados a los Mercados de la zona y se les habilitó puestos que cumplen con las normas de higiene y sanidad, además de tener sombra y climatización en muchos casos. Siguen estando en el centro de la ciudad pero en zonas habilitadas para ello. 

Lugares que no te puedes perder

· La Catedral Metropolitana: la entrada es gratuita y en la cripta está la tumba de Monseñor Romero, cura al que asesinaron en los años 80 mientras daba misa y que posteriormente se convirtió en el único santo del continente americano. Es impresionante tanto de día como de noche. 😍

Tercera semana

Empezamos con la documentación

Después de poner los pies un poco en el país y la ciudad, empezamos a investigar qué tenemos que hacer para poder convertirnos en salvadoreños al 100% en el país. 

La verdad que el proceso no es nada complicado, por el momento, y aquí te dejo algunas cosas que necesitarás saber si quieres quedarte más de 6 meses, que es lo que dura el visado de turista, y asentar tu vida aquí. 

1. Necesitas un documento con tu NIT

NIT es el Número de Identificación Tributaria. Con este número ya puedes empezar a mover cualquier papeleo en el país. No es necesario ser residente, ni siquiera haber aplicado a la residencia, para poder realizar cualquier gestión que cualquier otro salvadoreño podría hacer. 

Para conseguir este número, solo tienes que ir al Ministerio de hacienda y llevar tu pasaporte y 3$. Te pedirán un número de teléfono, un email y una dirección en la que estés alojado. Ya está. 

Es cuestión de 15 minutos y super fácil de hacer. 

2. Ahora puedes abrir una cuenta en el banco

Anteriormente solo había un par de bancos que te permitían abrir una cuenta como extranjero. A día de hoy, con solo tener el NIT y el pasaporte, puedes abrirla en cualquier banco. Yo recomendaría Banco Cuscatlán, tiene varias oficinas por todo el país. O sino, Banco hipotecario, es el banco del gobierno y permite sacar dinero de cantidades más grandes como cualquier tipo de transacción en Bitcoin. 

Ten en cuenta que cualquier transferencia de una cuenta extranjera a una cuenta en El Salvador puede retrasarse hasta 3 meses. 

3. A los 3 meses, solicita la residencia temporal con permiso de trabajo 

El proceso puede durar hasta 45 días hábiles y no puedes estar en el país si la visa de turista se caduca, así que lo mejor es solicitarla con tiempo. Una vez solicitada, no podrás abandonar el país en los próximos 8 meses, tenlo en cuenta. Sino el proceso se invalidará automáticamente. Una vez que la obtengas, podrás entrar y salir todo lo que quieras siempre que vuelvas en un máximo de 3 meses. 

Para poder solicitar la residencia, tendrás que ir a extranjería y solicitar los papeles, además de demostrar una fuente de ingresos mensuales. 

En nuestro caso, tendremos que solicitar la residencia temporal para emprendedores, que es algo más complicada: 

1. Presentar el documento de antecedentes criminales de nuestro país de origen. 

2. Presentar una prueba de los ingresos actuales.

3. Presentar un documento firmado ante notario de la intención de mudarnos al país y cuál es nuestro plan de negocios, además del itinerario a seguir en los próximos meses (compra del terreno, construcción, contratación de proveedores, etc.). 

Siempre tienes la opción de contactar con agencias de inmigración que ayudan a los extranjeros durante todo el proceso y presentan documentación y tienen notarios para poder validarlo. El precio es de 500$-1000$ si lo haces a través de ellos. Probablemente por tu cuenta no salga a más de 200$, pero la gestión es más lenta y complicada. 

Cuarta semana

Ya con todo el papeleo claro y esperando a poder utilizar nuestros ingresos en el proyecto, esta última semana la hemos dedicado a organizar los siguientes dos meses, ya que es lo que tardaremos en poder hacer uso de nuestro dinero. 

A través de las redes sociales, hemos contactado con un proyecto super chulo que está en la zona cafetera del país, adentrándose en la selva. 

Este proyecto está liderado por la Fundación Murphslife con varios proyectos en Sudamérica desde hace unos años. Aquí concretamente están trabajando en la construcción de una granja ecosostenible que permita a los lugareños poder vivir de los ingresos en un futuro. El proyecto es espectacular y tiene una parte destinada al turismo que es dónde nosotros queremos entrar para poder aprender y empaparnos todo lo posible de este proceso de construcción y apertura. Estamos seguros que nos será de gran ayuda cuando queramos empezar con nuestro proyecto en unos meses. 😍

First week 

Arrival to the airport - San Salvador

The first few days were a reality shock in many ways. The hot and humid weather was the first thing we noticed upon landing and leaving the airport. The security checks moved fairly quickly, and it took us no more than 20 minutes to get through security and customs. Since we were traveling with Flynn, before leaving, you had to fill out a pet ID, in addition to showing the pile of paperwork we already had from Spain. After a 10-minute check and a $10 fee, we were all in El Salvador.

 

The trip from the airport to San Salvador takes approximately one hour. It depends a lot on traffic, as at certain times you can be stuck for a while. We were picked up by the government's Investment Office in a van. We've been in contact with them since we began planning the project, and they've been very supportive throughout the process. The bus is tricky, as you have to walk a bit to catch it, but a taxi shouldn't cost more than $30 to the center of the capital.

The Airbnb we booked is quite close to the center. I always recommend, if you're staying for a long time, contacting the owners and agreeing on a price for the number of months you need. It will always be cheaper. Rentals in the capital aren't cheap for two reasons:

- The owners are well aware that San Salvador is becoming an attractive destination.

- Most of the foreigners who come here are North Americans or Australians, so it's still cheap for them.

Our house cost us $700 a month and is one of the cheapest we've found. However, Mario, the owner, was impeccable. Sean was quite sick to his stomach the first few days, and he brought us medicine and mineral water and came to visit us several times to make sure we were okay and had everything we needed.

El Espino

That weekend, he took us to see his farm, El Espino beach, and a tour of Berlín and Alegría, two beautiful towns in the La Joya mountain range with incredible views of the valley and the coast.

He treated us and cared for us like we were his family, and that's always appreciated when you're so far from home.

A few days later, Edwin, Economic Counselor at the Embassy of El Salvador in Spain and a close friend of ours, took us to La Libertad, the main city on the Pacific coast and very close to San Salvador. It's no more than a 30-minute drive.

Being a fairly small country, the distances are very short, and you can cross it from one end to the other in about 6 hours. The climate is much warmer in this region, and the humidity is intense. We were lucky that the day was somewhat cloudy, otherwise it would have been impossible to walk around.

The hottest hours in the country are from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. We took refuge with a cold beer at Acajútla, a very nice restaurant and bar with spectacular views of the seawall.

If you go to the boardwalk area, the prices aren't very cheap unless you go to the market. But if you continue walking toward Punta Roca Beach, you'll find cheaper places with spectacular views of the boardwalk from another angle—it's worth it.

Afterwards, we went to eat at Betos, a restaurant located on the cliffs between El Tunco and El Zonte, a true spectacle. Both the food and the views are impressive, and it's possibly the fanciest place we've been to so far.

Even so, the prices aren't outrageous; a meal for three people, with two or three drinks each, starters, and a main course, cost us $75. Honestly, you pay for what you enjoy; it's worth it.

Weekly shopping

One of the things we've had the hardest time finding is finding unprocessed, affordable, and safe food, especially in the first few weeks.

You can find many American-brand supermarkets that have everything, but they're usually expensive and contain tons of preservatives, additives, and many ultra-processed foods.

We opted for a less convenient, but healthier option in the long run: the Central Market. You can find everything there, and at cheaper prices. It's true that you have to be careful, especially with meat and fish, as they aren't refrigerated or properly stored. We did shop at supermarkets for that. But everything else can be found without problems and without as many chemicals as you would find at supermarkets.

  

The weekly shopping of pasta, fruits, and vegetables totaled $10. What a difference!

 

We also found many barbershops along the way, so Sean got his hair cut for $4!

Second week

Sightseeing in the Historic Center

The following weeks were spent getting familiar with the neighborhood, daily life, the shopping area, parks, entertainment, etc.

We explored the historic center, which was renovated not too many years ago after the country was liberated from the Maras (Maras) regime. It used to be filled with street vendors and tin and plastic stalls that made it impossible to walk. It was also quite unsafe, and you couldn't walk with your phone in your hand or carrying large amounts of money.

Now it's a renovated center, comparable to the rest of the continent and boasting beautiful natural spaces and monuments. All the street vendors were relocated to the local markets and were given stalls that meet hygiene and health standards, and many also have shade and air conditioning. They are still located in the city center, but in designated areas.

Places you can't miss

· The Metropolitan Cathedral: Admission is free, and the crypt houses the tomb of Monsignor Romero, a priest who was assassinated in the 1980s while giving mass and later became the only saint in the Americas. It's impressive both day and night.😍

The National Palace: the former government residence, now used primarily for official events. I would recommend visiting at night, as it closes at 10:00 PM and the lighting is incredible. Admission is $1 for nationals, $3 for Central Americans, and $5 for foreigners. 👌

BINAES (National Library of El Salvador): A gift from the Chinese government, it features five floors of books, digital content, free courses in 3D printing, programming, and web development; cafes, restaurants... and several terraces with views of Civic Plaza. And admission is free! 💻

While you're there, I recommend you visit the Jardín Centroamérica. It's beautiful and a great place to sit and relax amidst the chaos of the city. 🌱

· Rosario Church: It may not look like much from the outside—in fact, I'd say it's even ugly—but inside, it's one of the most innovative and attractive churches I've visited so far. Admission is $2. 🙏

Other places to visit

Although we haven't had time to visit them, everyone is raving about Puerta del Diablo, Planes de Renderos, and El Boquerón. They're natural sites with impressive views but somewhat far from the city. We haven't been able to go yet, but I'm sure we will in the future. 😉

Third week

We start with the paperwork

After getting our feet wet in the country and the city, we started researching what we needed to do to become 100% Salvadoran.

The truth is, the process isn't complicated at all, so far, and here are some things you'll need to know if you want to stay longer than 6 months, which is the duration of the tourist visa, and settle down here. 

1. You need a document with your NIT

NIT is the Tax Identification Number. With this number, you can start processing any paperwork in the country. You don't need to be a resident, or even have applied for residency, to be able to carry out any procedure that any other Salvadoran could.

To get this number, just go to the Ministry of Finance and bring your passport and $3. They'll ask for a phone number, an email address, and the address where you're staying. That's it.

It takes only 15 minutes and is super easy to do.

2. Now you can open a bank account

A few years ago, there were only a couple of banks that allowed you to open an account as a foreigner. Nowadays, with just your NIT (Tax Identification Number) and passport, you can open one at any bank. I would recommend Banco Cuscatlán; it has several branches throughout the country. Alternatively, Banco Hipócritario is the government bank and allows you to withdraw larger amounts, such as any type of Bitcoin transaction.

Keep in mind that any transfer from a foreign account to an account in El Salvador can take up to three months.

3. After 3 months, apply for temporary residence with a work permit. 

The process can take up to 45 business days, and you can't stay in the country if your tourist visa expires, so it's best to apply early. Once applied for, you won't be able to leave the country for the next 8 months, so keep that in mind. Otherwise, the process will be automatically invalidated. Once you obtain it, you'll be able to enter and leave as much as you want, as long as you return within a maximum of 3 months.

To apply for residency, you'll have to go to the immigration office and request the paperwork, as well as prove a source of monthly income.

In our case, we'll have to apply for temporary residency for entrepreneurs, which is a bit more complicated:

1. Present a criminal record check from our country of origin.

2. Present proof of current income.

3. Present a notarized document stating our intention to move to the country and our business plan, as well as the itinerary we'll follow in the coming months (land purchase, construction, hiring suppliers, etc.).

You always have the option of contacting immigration agencies, which help foreigners throughout the process. They present documentation and have notaries to validate it. The cost is $500-$1,000 if you do it through them. It probably won't cost more than $200 on your own, but the process is slower and more complicated.

Fourth week

With all the paperwork in place and waiting to use our income for the project, we've spent this last week organizing the next two months, as that's how long it will take to be able to use our money.

Through social media, we contacted a super cool project located in the country's coffee-growing region, deep in the jungle.

This project is led by the Murphslife Foundation, which has been involved in several projects in South America for a few years. Specifically, they're working on building an eco-sustainable farm that will allow locals to live off the income in the future. The project is spectacular and has a tourism component, which is where we want to focus so we can learn and immerse ourselves in this construction and development process as much as possible. We're sure it will be of great help when we want to start our project in a few months. 😍
